Spinal cord infarction: a highly reproducible stroke model.

چکیده
The study of focal central nervous system ischemia has been impeded by the lack of animal models that are both reproducible and simulate human ischemic strokes. To circumvent these problems, we have developed a rabbit spinal cord infarction model. Infarction of the caudal lumbar cord is produced by temporary occlusion of the abdominal aorta below the renal arteries. One hour of ischemia causes all of the animals to develop spinal cord infarctions in a highly reproducible pattern. These animals can be maintained alive for at least 2 weeks post-operatively. We believe that the tissue changes in spinal cord infarction are qualitatively similar to infarction of most areas of the central nervous system. This model has numerous features which make it particularly useful for neurochemical, neuropathological, and neurophysiological studies.

Spinal cord infarction.
Spinal cord infarction occurs infrequently and may have diverse causes. It is necessary to establish whether an intrinsic or extrinsic lesion is responsible for the impaired cord function. Although therapy is limited at this time, the long-term prognosis is not necessarily unfavorable.

Several serotonin inhibitors have been shown to reduce neurologic deficits in experimental CNS ischemia. Using biochemical and histological methods we tested the effects of the serotonin inhibitors cyproheptadine and brom-LSD in a highly reproducible rabbit spinal cord ischemia model. Detailed mapping of regional spinal cord blood flow was used to guide sampling for the biochemical studies. We ...

BACKGROUND Acute spontaneous spinal cord syndromes often remain etiologically ambiguous despite extensive diagnostic efforts. In the previous literature five cases are described with acute spinal cord syndromes interpreted as spinal cord ischemic strokes because of association with vertebral body infarctions on MRI. CASE DESCRIPTIONS Three cases are presented, and the literature is reviewed. ...

Combined cerebellar and spinal ischemic stroke is a rare, critical condition. We report a patient with combined cerebellar and bilateral posterolateral cervical spinal cord infarction due to bilateral stenosis of the vertebral arteries. MRI is the method of choice for imaging this condition; diffusion-weighted imaging of the spinal cord gives reliable results.

Spontaneous Ischemic Infarction of the Spinal Cord with Traumatic Sequela • What is believed to have been spontaneous infarction of the spinal cord is reported in two individuals with known chronic cardiovascular disease apparently causing paraparesis while driving motor vehicles. Although blunt trauma to the spinal cord cannot be ruled out, there was no objective evidence of such. The history ...
